Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
The focus of our 2017 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal (ACA) is highlighting the importance of educating and passing on our faith to future generations. Our Catholic faith is rich with tradition and has done so much good in our community for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. We feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, care for the sick, and educate the young because we are called to as Catholics in our faith.
Many years ago, the term "catechesis" was given to the totality of the Church’s efforts to form disciples. Catechesis is an education in faith of the children, young people, and adults and begins with the early teachings of Jesus Christ. Today, our Office of Catechesis and Faith Formation has the responsibility of preserving our Church’s great history of teachings across the Archdiocese of Portland. We are fortunate to have Rolando Moreno, who taught religion at Central Catholic High School in Portland and served as pastoral associate of Catechesis and Family Life at St. Joseph Parish in Salem, as our Director of Catechesis and Faith Formation for the Archdiocese of Portland. Rolando works closely with parishes and Catholic schools to ensure our rich traditions are taught to all our faithful.
I ask that you keep in prayer the important work of our Office of Catechesis and Faith Formation in a special way. Our local Church has had its challenges, but we have persevered and will be stronger than ever before, but we need your help.
Of course, this appeal also helps to fund other important ministries that we have a common responsibility for, including scholarships to our Catholic schools for deserving families, care and support for infirm and retired priests, Hispanic ministries, prison ministry, deaf ministry, youth ministry support, the permanent diaconate, life, justice and peace ministry, and many others (see our website for a full list of ACA-supported ministries).
Thank you in advance for your prayerful and generous participation in this year’s appeal.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Alexander K. Sample
Archbishop of Portland in Oregon
