Independence Day

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It gives me great joy to celebrate with all of you this July Fourth holiday here in the United States and in our local state of Oregon.

Patriotism is considered one of the virtues, the human virtues, that we all share in. We are the best citizens of the world though when we are the best citizens of the Kingdom of God.

We have so much to be grateful for in this great land, and I hope that the Catholics of western Oregon willl continue to make a positive contribution to the shaping of our culture and our social relationships.

May God bless you on this holiday as we celebrate the gift of freedom.
